Wise County Water Supply District: A Legacy of Providing for Decatur
Since its establishment in 1965, the Wise County Water Supply District (WCWSD) has been a cornerstone of Decatur’s water infrastructure. Although the name suggests broader coverage, the district exclusively serves the city limits of Decatur.
Our History
The district was born out of Decatur’s search for a dependable water source, which began as early as the 1920s. After the challenges of Decatur Lake’s failed dam in 1935, WCSD was created to address long-term water needs. By 1966, the district had successfully built a pipeline to source water from Lake Bridgeport, marking a turning point in Decatur’s water supply history.
Commitment to Decatur
WCWSD operates as a debt retirement district, funded through tax revenues and water sales to the city. Plans for future WCWSD upgrades will be presented to voters, including a potential bond election in 2025.
Infrastructure Milestones
Over the decades, WCWSD has partnered with the city to build and upgrade infrastructure. Highlights include:
Pipeline Upgrades: From the original 12-inch pipeline to current plans for a 24-inch main pipeline.
Water Treatment Capacity: Decatur can treat 3 million gallons of water daily and store 3.1 million gallons.
Storage Tanks: The addition of modern storage tanks, including a new 1-million-gallon tower.
WCWSD Projects
With Decatur’s continued growth, engineers are developing plans to increase treatment capacity to 6.6 million gallons per day and replace critical pipelines. Additionally, WCWSD is exploring the reuse of treated wastewater for industrial purposes.
